Cary was known as a resort retreat in the early 1900s and has grown into a community offering a variety of home styles, some with sweeping views of the Fox River. Although much of its land is reserved for open space, Cary still has room for new neighborhoods with growing families. The train station remains the hub of the downtown with many of Cary’s residents commuting daily to Chicago.

Cary is one of the fastest growing communities in McHenry County. The population, as of July 2008, is estimated to be 19,559. The school district has kept pace with the community’s growth. Cary is well known for its innovation in education, with its magnet schools among the country’s best success stories.
